Summer in Germany – Part 5: Marburg
Series: Leisure activities at our locations
Around 77,000 people live in the Hessian city of Marburg, around a third of the population are students. This gives the city a lively atmosphere despite its rich history. The city is known as the place where the Brothers Grimm lived and studied, and it is also known for its many museums and historical sites, especially for its well preserved Old Town. In summer, the University City on the river Lahn offers the perfect mix of nature and cultural activities.
Cooling off by the water
Whether it is a walk along the Lahn, a day at the leisure pool or at the lake, water is always a great way to cool off in summer. These three places are perfect for hot summer days in Marburg:
Seepark Niederweimar
A day at Niederweimar Bathing Lake is never boring. You can lie on the white sandy beach, go water skiing, play volleyball, or simply cool off in the water. The adjacent restaurant provides food and drinks.
AquaMar leisure pool
This municipal sports and leisure pool is very popular in the summer months thanks to its outdoor pool. There is a large sunbathing lawn, as well as facilities for sporting activities, such as swimming laps in the sports pool and playing beach volleyball.
Pedal boating
Hire a pedal boat and explore the city from the water. You can hire pedal boats on the Lahn for a small fee, or you can take a stroll along the water and watch the boats while enjoying an ice cream.

3 Tage Marburg
The city festival “3 Tage Marburg”(3 days in Marburg) takes place from 11 to 13 July and offers a colorful program full of live music, dancing and many other performances. There are numerous stalls selling food and drinks. The highlights of the festival are a big fireworks display and a dragon boat race.
Marburger Sommernächte
The annual open-air concert series “Marburger Sommernächte” (Marburg Summer Nights) takes place this year from July 17 to 20. Over four days, national and international artists perform on the Schlosspark stage. This festival is a special highlight of the Marburg summer every year.

Organised in cooperation with various universities, the festival mostly takes place outdoors. If you are interested in film and culture, this is the place to be!
Sightseeing
Marburg also has many tourist attractions. There is plenty to see and experience, especially in and around the old town. When visiting Marburg, you should definitely visit the following three sights:
- Landgrave's Castle
The Landgrave's Castle, located in the old town, is one of Marburg's most famous landmarks. It houses the Museum of Art and Cultural History of Philipps University Marburg. Visitors can learn about the history of Hesse and enjoy a wonderful view of Marburg and the Lahn Valley from the castle. In the summer, the castle grounds are often used as a venue for events.
- Elisabeth Church
St. Elisabeth's Church is located in the northern part of Marburg's Old Town. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany. The church is a Protestant parish church and is home to many important works of art, such as the Elisabeth Shrine. The church attracts many visitors every year.
- Oberstadt (Old Town)
Marburg's Old Town, also known as the "Oberstadt" (Upper Town), is particularly worth seeing as it is so well preserved. With its half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways, and steep staircases, it is a sight to remember. Follow the Grimm-dich-Pfad to explore the old town and discover sculptures and texts from the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales.
